The Hobby Business Evaluator
You have an activity you enjoy. Somewhere, someone has already drafted a plan to turn it into a funnel. The committee has obtained a copy and will review it with you now.
Keep a copy for the next person with a business plan for your weekend
A footnote from the committee chair, who was not present for the review: you are allowed to be bad at things you enjoy. You are allowed to do them slowly, without improving, without an audience and without a plan. Some things are worth doing simply because the afternoon goes better when you do them.
Full disclosure: this site exists partly so you’ll read a newsletter. It’s The Detention Slip. Here’s why we’re telling you. It is not a hobby business. It is barely a business.
Some hobbies do become good businesses
People turn hobbies into livelihoods all the time, and some of them are very happy about it. The committee has no objection to that. Its concern is narrower: the growing assumption that any activity left unmonetized is an opportunity being wasted, and that enjoyment on its own is not a sufficient result.
It is. That is the finding. The committee has been trying to publish it for years and keeps being asked what the business model is.
